Jose Mourinho has suggested that his former Tottenham player Son Heung-min is TOO GOOD for Spurs and, instead, should be playing for clubs challenging for trophies - a list which includes Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Son, 31, is just about to complete his ninth season with Spurs, having joined from Bayer Leverkusen for €30 million back in 2015.

The South Korea captain has been among the most consistent Premier League forwards during his time in England, scoring 120 league goals and 163 for the Lilywhites overall.

He dovetailed beautifully with England captain Harry Kane until the striker moved to Bayern Munich but has taken up the goalscoring mantle for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season.

Now club captain, Son has scored 17 Premier League goals this term, including one last week against the Reds at Anfield, and his club manager has described him as the best attacker in the division.

However, like most Spurs players, one thing missing from Son’s locker is trophies.

The closest he came to capturing glory was defeat to Liverpool during the 2018-19 Champions League final, while Spurs also lost the 2020-21 EFL Cup final with Son in the ranks.

It’s a poor return for a player of such calibre, with sides such as City, Liverpool and Chelsea gobbling up the honours throughout the nine-time Asian player of the year’s time on these shores.

And Mourinho, his former Spurs manager agrees. Describing Son as a player who could ‘win titles’, the Special One listed the clubs that might have suited him better.

“I look at Son as one of the best players in the world,” he told EA Sports FC Online.

“Maybe Tottenham supporters, they are not going to be happy with what I’m going to say, it’s not of course disrespect. He could win titles, he could play for the best teams.

“He could be playing in England for Man City, for Liverpool, for Chelsea. It could be abroad, playing in one of the top teams.

“He has this modern mobility of the attacking players. He can play through the middle, he can play from the sides, can be wide, to come inside. Can be inside.”

Son came close to playing for Jurgen Klopp during his Bundesliga days with the Liverpool manager later admitting he missed out on signing him after he left Hamburg.

The forward had the choice between Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund and Leverkusen, opting for the latter amid fears he would be rotated in and out of Klopp’s team.
