A 94th minute equaliser from Real Madrid rescued what could be a vital point in their title retention bid from a controversial classic against Sevilla.
Scorers: Asensio 67′, Hazard 90+4′; Fernando 22′, Rakitić pen 78′
Karim Benzema thought he had given Real an early lead when he headed in a far post cross, only for it to be ruled out for an Alvaro Odriozola offside in the build-up.
And Sevilla duly punished that decision shortly afterwards when Fernando showed great feet in a congested box to make space and rifle past Thibaut Courtois.
Technology again frustrated Zinedine Zidane’s side after the break when VAR checked for a potential Real penalty for handball, only to opt against awarding it before they finally got their equaliser on 67 minutes.
A neat move saw Toni Kroos pick out Marco Asensio in the area and he swept a superb first time strike into the net – and then the officiating intervened again to frustrate Los Blancos.
They thought they had a late penalty when Benzema ran through and was fouled in the area only for play to be brought back to a Sevilla corner where Eder Militão was adjudged to have handled and the visitors were awarded a spot kick instead, which former Barcelona man Ivan Rakitić calmly tucked away to do his old club a huge favour.
It would have been an even bigger favour too had Real not bagged a last gasp leveller when the ball took a huge deflection off Eden Hazard from a Toni Kroos strike and wormed its way into the net.
The result moves Real up to second, two points off leaders Atlético and level with Barcelona, with just three games remaining.
It’s going down to the wire!
