Things went from bad to worse for those of a Plymouth Argyle persuasion when Luke Cundle was recalled by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Cundle is the second Argyle loanee to return to their parent club with Finn Azaz having gone back to Aston Villa to be sold on to Middlesbrough.

Tottenham Hotspur youngster Ashley Phillips has arrived at Home Park though, in the first piece of business in the Ian Foster era.

As the transfer window presses on, here are some further moves we expect to be made by Plymouth Argyle.

In: Isaac Hayden

Azaz and Cundle are certainly more forward-thinking midfielders but that hasn’t stopped the rumours linking Argyle with a defensive-minded player.

Isaac Hayden, once of Arsenal, has been a victim of Newcastle United’s recent success, to the point that they were more than happy to loan him out to Standard Liege.

He is still out in Belgium now but the Magpies are willing to recall him to then send him to the Championship, with “several clubs” having “registered their interest”, according to Football Insider.

Argyle appear to be amongst this cohort and the 28-year-old is no stranger to the division, having joined Norwich City on loan last season, where he made 14 appearances, nine of which were starts.

Jordan Houghton and Adam Randell are the duo that have primarily occupied this particular area on the field down in Devon whilst Matt Butcher was used sparingly by Steven Schumacher, 11 of his 14 outings coming as a substitute.

As the club moves on from Schumacher to Ian Foster, the new manager can now make his own mark and sound out his own targets.

Out: Callum Burton and Macaulay Gillesphey

The Home Park faithful will be hoping for a few more signings to accompany Hayden but there may first be outgoings from the Theatre of Greens.

First of all, centre-back Macaulay Gillesphey is a transfer target for Charlton Athletic with South London Press reporter Rich Cawley writing of the Addicks’ interest.

This was spoken of a week ago and there has been very little mentioned since, so either Charlton might be cooling off their pursuit or it is a case of dotting the Is and crossing the Ts.

Gillesphey has just four Championship appearances to his name and yet, a man with even fewer is goalkeeper Callum Burton.

The pair played the part in the League One winning season but as Argyle have made the step up, they may well have been left in the dust.

Burton is yet to get a taste of the new division with his only action coming in the League Cup while Conor Hazard selection between the sticks for the recent FA Cup victory over Sutton United highlighted the current pecking order.

He proved himself to be more than capable of playing in League One last year and so whilst there haven’t been any concrete rumours just yet, it wouldn’t be a surprise in the slightest to see the player pushing for a loan move in the second half of this season because that is the least he deserves.
