In taking the Southampton job, Ralph Hasenhüttl went against the advice of his family, he has revealed.
The Austrian took over at St Mary’s in December with the club in the midst of a tough relegation battle.
After guiding them to safety at the weekend, he admitted that those closest to him weren’t too keen on his new job.
However, Hasenhüttl himself is glad he took it on as he relishes succeeding in difficult circumstances.
“Yes some people did tell me that it was a risk to come here – it was my family!” he said.
“I’ve always spoken about being a manager who wants this situation. I don’t know why but my way is never the easy way.
“If you look at my managerial history, I was always at clubs who struggled, except Leipzig, of course, but that was different.
“But the other clubs had a similar situation to Southampton. If you make it, you can enjoy it much more. It is even sweeter.”
Prior to the RB Leipzig job, the Saints boss was in charge of Unterhaching, Aalen and Ingolstadt.
