The Ireland international bagged 27 goals as John Eustace’s side finished 19th in the table, three points clear of 22nd place Birmingham City (all stats from Fbref).

It was a breakout campaign for the forward, who only scored five from 34 appearances in the Championship in his first year at Ewood Park.

While Rovers were unable to push on and make the best use of a forward that prolific, he still earned the club a handsome transfer sum.

According to the BBC, Ipswich Town agreed to a deal that could rise as high as £11 million to sign him over the summer.

Here we take a look at whether Szmodics’ time at Portman Road has gone to plan so far after his August switch from Blackburn

Szmodics made the jump up to the Premier League with his switch to Ipswich over the summer, with his performances catching the attention of the Tractor Boys’ hierarchy.

In fact, the forward revealed that his introduction to his new teammates involved Kieran McKenna showing them a replay of his goal against Leeds United late last season.

The 82nd minute strike earned Blackburn a 1-0 win at Elland Road that proved significant at both ends of the table, with Ipswich pipping the Whites to second in the table.

“When I signed at Ipswich and had the first meeting in this room with the manager, he welcomed me to the team and said we’ve got a clip to show of Sam and he showed that goal,” said Szmodics, via TWTD.

“It obviously helped with Ipswich’s push for promotion and made a lot of Ipswich fans very happy.”

The forward earned his debut for the Suffolk outfit off the bench in a 2-0 home loss to Liverpool on the opening day of the campaign.

Szmodics’ first goal for his new team came just one week later at the Etihad, as he opened the scoring against the champions inside the opening minutes, however McKenna’s side went on to lose 4-1 in the end.

Ipswich Town’s Premier League struggles

Szmodics has made a total of seven appearances for Ipswich so far this season in the league, starting four times.

The goal against Man City remains his only contribution so far, with the team struggling for form.

The Tractor Boys earned back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League, with many predicting them to go straight back down.

While Szmodics was one of many new signings over the summer, Ipswich’s attempts to build a team capable of fighting for their survival have not gone to plan so far.

There are still plenty of games remaining for Ipswich, but zero wins from seven games is not an encouraging sign.

Despite their lack of victories, McKenna’s side sit 17th in the table, one point clear of Crystal Palace in 18th.

Many Blackburn supporters will likely be hoping that Szmodics can show his best in the Premier League, and play a role in helping his new club have a successful season, having parted ways with the Lancashire outfit on positive terms.
