Earlier this week it was revealed by Jose Pedrerol on El Chiringuito TV that Real Madrid could sell Rodrygo this summer. That did pose the question: Should Manchester City move for the Brazilian international this summer? It’s always seemed to be a question of where Rodrygo would fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad, which would dictate whether or not City could and should move to sign him this summer. But now a fresh report indicates that Rodrygo is considering his future at Real Madrid. Now the question appears to be: Is the opportunity to sign Rodrygo too good to pass up for Manchester City?
Ruairidh Barlow has relayed a report from Radio Marca for Football Espana that Rodrygo is considering his future at the Bernabeu. Furthermore, Barlow reports that Rodrygo has been considering his future for months. Barlow adds that a lack of chemistry between him, Jude Bellingham Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior has seen Rodrygo become disillusioned with life at the Bernabeu. This could see Rodrygo leave Real Madrid as per Ruairidh Barlow’s report. Barlow names Manchester City as one club who have previously had an interest in signing the Brazilian winger.
Rodrygo, on his day, is a quality winger. With his speed, dribbling ability and eye for goal he can be a devastating player. He is also selfless and is willing to help his team defensively when required. Those attributes are suited to playing in a Pep Guardiola side. But is another winger what City need this summer? There are more pressing needs to be addressed in Pep Guardiola’s squad it seems.
Manchester City likely need to sign a goalkeeper and a full-back and add more creativity in midfield this summer. Those are pressing needs which must be addressed this summer. Rodrygo isn’t a creative midfielder so he wouldn’t fill that particular need. With Oscar Bobb, Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Omar Marmoush and Phil Foden in City’s squad there’s an argument to be made that City don’t need Rodrygo. Perhaps the only way City would move for the Brazilian is if they deem him a player that they can’t miss out on signing. But that remains to be seen.
It does seem that Rodrygo is likely to leave Real Madrid this summer. But whether or not he arrives at the Etihad is dependent on if City feel that they must sign him. Rodrygo is a good player and a great player on his day. But he may not be the type of player that City deem that they must have so that may scupper any hope of City moving for him this summer.
