Liverpool secured victory over Newcastle United in the most dramatic fashion possible.
In the eighth minute of stoppage-time, Fabio Carvalho volleyed home from close-range to secure a priceless 2-1 win for his team.
Unsurprisingly, the roof came off Anfield when the ball rippled the back of the net and the goal means Liverpool go into Saturday’s Merseyside derby versus Everton full of confidence.
Carvalho has deservedly received plenty of plaudits for his game-changing cameo, but the Reds’ real on-pitch hero in the win over Newcastle was teenage sensation Harvey Elliott.
The former Fulham midfielder played the full 90 minutes at Anfield and was undoubtedly the best player on the park.
Elliott was absolutely everywhere, orchestrating attacks for fun and putting Newcastle under pressure with his slick dribbling and passing.
Without the Englishman in the middle of the park, it’s highly unlikely Liverpool would have secured all three points.
It was a match-winning display by Elliott, it’s as simple as that.
And if you don’t believe the statement above, check out his magical highlights from the game…
Yeah, the kid is going right to the very top and at this rate, he’s in with a chance of making England’s squad for the 2022 World Cup. That left foot is an absolute wand, one capable of picking the opposition apart with almost effortless ease.
Elliott was rightly praised to the rafters by his manager Jurgen Klopp when speaking to the press after the game.
He told the BBC: “Harvey Elliott was the best player on the pitch, without a shadow of a doubt. It was nice to see he picks up from where he was before the bad injury.”
Klopp certainly wasn’t the only high-profile footballing figure who waxed lyrical about Elliott’s dazzling display either.
Both Jamie Carragher and Gary Lineker voiced their opinions about him on Twitter.
: “Harvey Elliott played a part in the goal. He’s been absolutely outstanding tonight. A very exciting young talent.”
While Carragher posted after the full-time whistle had been blown: “That’s Karma that for all the time wasting! Harvey Elliott outstanding & brilliant cameo again from Carvalho!!”
Elliott, who was named Man of the Match for his efforts, also gave a post-match interview that was nearly as good as his on-pitch performance.
Speaking to The Athletic, he said: “I want to give my all for Liverpool and that means running every game until I can’t run anymore. I’ll do whatever it takes. Liverpool is my club and there’s nothing more exciting I could be doing.
“I’m thankful to the gaffer for his kind words. It’s nice to hear and it means a lot but all the credit tonight should go to Fabio. It’s not about me.
“I played my part but he was the match-winner. Fabio came up with the goods. For me he was the best player out there because he won us the game.
“Obviously with what happened last season with my injury, I just want to grow as a player. I’m a year older, hopefully a year wiser.”
