Hartlepool United to monitor attacker’s fitness before Stevenage game
Football League World
Hartlepool United are keeping close tabs on the condition of forward Marcus Carver, as they prepare for Saturday’s showdown with Stevenage.
The 28-year-old was hauled off only a few minutes after the start of the second half during the midweek draw with Carlisle United.
Carver was the club’s opening signing of the January window from National League North outfit Southport, where he scored 12 goals in England’s sixth tier.
He is yet to open his account for Pools, having featured twice since his arrival at Victoria Park.
And he has openly admitted that he may be suffering from a lack of match sharpness, though the step-up to the high intensity of League Two was never expected to be a swift transition.
Speaking after Tuesday’s stalemate in Cumbria, Hartlepool boss Graeme Lee told The Northern Echo: “From his first game, he just looked a little bit fatigued tonight.
“He’s lost a little bit of spark. We knew he was a little bit tight after the game. I just hoped he’d have recovered a little bit more so he could have another crack.
He added: “He’s openly admitted his (had a) lack of training. I think he just played games with no training inbetween. It was just managing games.
“We need to fully assess him and get him up to speed. At the moment, it’s just games, games for us.
“He’s a great lad. His attitude is right. I thought on Saturday when he was fresh, he had a really good impact on the game.
“Tonight, you could just see he looked a little bit jaded. We’ll get him back in and recovered ready for Saturday.”
Lee will want as many players to pick from as possible as his side look to conquer Saturday’s test and further themselves from the relegation zone.
They currently remain 10 points above the drop zone in 17th place, however, they have only won one of their last eleven League Two outings.
In that time, they have struggled for goals, too. Their top scorer this term is Mark Cullen with only four strikes to his name, so they will hope that Carver’s fitness ultimatum is positive and that he can rekindle his form for Southport.
Though he is yet to make his mark for Pools, they will nonetheless be hoping for as many players to pick from as possible as they look to conquer Saturday’s test and further themselves from the relegation zone
