Harry Maguire is expected to remain at Manchester United beyond Tuesday night’s transfer deadline, despite reported interest from around Europe.

The Manchester United captain has been linked with a January move to Inter Milan — as a potential replacement for Milan Skriniar, who appears Paris Saint-Germain bound — but it doesn’t sound like the centre-back is ready to leave Old Trafford just yet.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Maguire wants to stay at United and win a trophy with the Red Devils on the verge of booking their place in the League Cup final. Ten Hag’s side also secured their place in the FA Cup fifth round over the week.

The Europa League is another competition United could win this season, but the next hurdle in Europe involves a two-legged clash against La Liga giants Barcelona. That will be a huge test for Ten Hag’s team but we have every reason to be confident going into the tie.

However, the report from MEN states that Maguire, 29, is likely to reassess his future in the summer. You can see why he would want to after falling down the pecking order at United.

For instance, he has made only two Premier League starts since United’s 4-0 defeat away at Brentford in August.

United have come a long way since then and it feels like injuries are the only way Maguire is getting back into the team this season. Ten Hag rightly favours a partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, with Luke Shaw recently becoming a preferred option when compared to the club captain.

While a lot of fans would be happy to see Maguire moved on, Ten Hag needs to make sure he has a squad that can carry us until the end of the season. That’s why the club are reluctant to accept the first offer they received for Maguire — midway through the season.

I reckon Inter Milan will be invited back to the negotiation table in the summer, unless they find someone where to replace Skiniar.

United should return to the transfer market for a younger centre-back in the summer because it won’t be long before people start calling for Varane’s replacement. The Frenchman needs better cover than Victor Lindelof and it won’t be long before he turns 30 (April).
