Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has spoken out after his side’s second-leg against Roma in Thursday night’s Europa League semi-final second-leg.

Despite carrying with them a 6-2 first-leg advantage, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took no chances after naming a very strong starting eleven.

Although the Italians put up a decent fight, a brace from striker Edinson Cavani sealed the tie and has sent the Red Devils to this month’s final in Gdansk, Poland.

In addition to Cavani’s goalscoring heroics, goalkeeper David De Gea also played a vital part in his side maintaining their aggregate lead.

Irrespective of the game eventually ending 3-2 in Roma’s favour, the tie’s damage was done during the first-leg and Thursday night was just a case of seeing it out.

But back to Cavani – following recent news reaching fans that the South American could be open to extending his Old Trafford stay, Thursday’s performance will certainly cause even more excitement.

Speaking after the match, Maguire took the time to praise his striker – drawing particular attention to the 34-year-old’s work rate and elite level movement.

“It’s a great achievement to get to the final,” Maguire said (as quoted by BBC). “We didn’t win the game and that’s disappointing but we did the hard work in the first leg.

“We started the game a bit edgy. It was end to end like basketball and we gave them too many chances in second half.

“Now we’ve got to go to the final and win it. Edinson scored two great goals and his movement and work rate without the ball is excellent.

“His second goal is typical of him and what he has done throughout his career.”
