Harry Maguire has been one of England‘s best players at the 2022 World Cup thus far.
Like he did in Euro 2020, the towering centre-back looks a completely different footballer to the one we’ve seen at Manchester United in recent years.
At club level, Maguire has been woeful for the most part, but on the international stage, he regularly performs to a world-class standard.
Maguire was exceptional in England’s 0-0 draw with the United States of America in Qatar, while the 29-year-old was also a commanding force in the 3-0 win over Wales.
But despite the fact he’s been one of the stars of the World Cup, Maguire was still a topic of ridicule on Thursday, ahead of the Three Lions’ last-16 match against Senegal on Sunday evening.
And no, it wasn’t from the mouth of a pundit or anyone else working on the tournament, which makes it all the more bizarre.
Instead, the trolling of Maguire came from the Ghanaian parliament. Amazingly, we’re not joking one bit.
The footage cropped up on social media on Thursday and we had to double check to make sure it was indeed real.
Check it out…
What is going on?!
Isaac Adongo, a member of parliament who is tied to the opposition National Democratic Congress party, used Maguire to attack the ruling New Patriotic Party over mishandling of the Ghanaian economy.
When speaking about Mahamudu Bawumia, who serves as the country’s vice president and was formerly Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Adongo referenced Maguire and his downturn in form over the past 12 months.
“If you are a fan of football, and I was happy to see the jubilation when Ghana won, but there was a player in the United Kingdom, in England called Maguire who was playing for Manchester United,” Adongo told the Ghana parliament.
“Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere. He was seen as the best defender in the world, Manchester United were at the bottom.
“He became the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence, tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents. Mr Speaker, when you see the opponents go to score, Maguire will score for them.”
Adongo then labelled Bawumia an “economic Maguire”.
“Mr Speaker, you remember in this country we also have an economic Maguire,” he continued. “This economic Maguire, we’re clapping saying this man is the best in managing foreign terms.
“The same economic Maguire was at Central University delivering lectures on how to restore the value of the Cedi. Mr Speaker why we gave this Maguire the opportunity to be at the centre of our defence, he became the rest of our own goals.
“Why he thought he was the best in capital opportunity, he moved us to 40.4. Why at that time he was the best at managing the recession at nine per cent, he moved it to 54 per cent. Mr Speaker the biggest issue is now is that when we pay the appearance fee for this Maguire.”
Are we sure this world isn’t actually a simulation? We’re starting to wonder to be honest.
Here’s how fans on social media have reacted to the footage from the Ghanaian parliament…
Maguire should use the video as extra motivation for England’s match against Senegal, which kicks off at 7pm GMT on Sunday.
