The England skipper put the visitors on a path to victory following his well-executed volley nestled past a helpless Kasper Schmeichel in the Celtic net shortly after the interval.

The six-time winners of the competition displayed their qualities throughout the 97 minutes in ball possession and chance creation, but Daizen Maeda’s late header gives Brendan Rodgers’ side a semblance of hope heading to Bavaria for Tuesday’s eagerly anticipated second leg.

Speaking to Danny Jamieson from TNT Sports, Kane insisted experiencing tough moments at Celtic Park in the later stages of the match did not come as a surprise to him.

Q: Harry, congratulations, first leg lead to take back to Munich, what did you make of your side’s performance tonight?

Harry Kane: “Yeah, it was okay, I think whenever you win a game like this you can always be pleased because it is not an easy place to come. There is definitely areas in the game where we could have done better and we will need to improve for next week but overall, we scored at the right time, just before half-time, just after half-time and obviously it’s a shame to concede a goal, but you know, they put us under a bit of pressure but we had to stay strong and we done that and we obviously take a lead back to our home next week.”

Q: As you say, getting the goals at the right kind of times, the first half in particular, did you have to be patient and almost let Celtic ride the wave of emotion that comes from the stand and be patient and wait for that breakthrough to come?

Harry Kane: “Yeah, we knew the atmosphere would kind of give them a bit of momentum to the start of the game, obviously they nearly scored after a minute or so, so that helped that it got disallowed, but yeah, we had to be patient. We knew we were going to have probably more of the ball, more possession, have it in and around their box and we had to be patient with it. In the end it was a good through ball from Upa [Dayot Upamecano] and a great finish from Michael [Olise] and sometimes you need a bit of special quality to open a game like this up.”

“Then we come out in the second half with the same intensity and got that second goal, and had control of the game, but you know, once they scored, we were under pressure, the crowd got behind them and we found it difficult to keep the ball. But, we’re in the Champions League knockout stages so there’s going to be tough moments in each game.”
