Harry Kane may have only appeared at one World Cup in his career, but he’s maximised his minutes on the pitch. With six goals in as many games, England’s captain goes into Qatar with the best goals-per-game ratio of any player at this year’s tournament to have featured in at least five games.

The Three Lions star has the same number of World Cup goals as Lionel Messi, matching the PSG man’s total in 13 fewer games. He is also a single goal behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of seven, the Portuguese star averaging a goal every 2.43 games.

If Kane is just as prolific at this years tournament, he could become England’s leading scorer at the World Cup. Gary Lineker holds that distinction with an impressive figure of 10 goals in 12 games, scoring once every 1.2 games on average. Kane, however, only needs to hit the back of the net once to break a tie with Lineker for most goals by an England international in major tournaments.

One-time World Cup winner Thomas Müller is the next most formidable goalscorer in Qatar, the German finding the back of the net once every 1.6 games on average. Other players with admirable goal averages are among the global elite – Neymar (6 in 10, 1.67 average), Karim Benzema (3 in 5, 1.67 average), and Kylian Mbappé (4 in 7, 1.75 average) will be relied on for their potency in front of goal, to lead their respective teams to glory in Qatar.
