Enrique felt the narrative surrounding the match is skewed against PSG
Luis Enrique snapped back at the suggestion his Paris Saint-Germain team have only properly clicked this season.
Enrique has been PSG head coach since the summer of 2023, guiding them to the Ligue 1 title in both seasons in charge.
His side were stunned at the semi-final stage of the Champions League last season by losing to finalists Borussia Dortmund, but he can guide the Parisians to their maiden European crown on Saturday night when they face Inter Milan in the final in Munich’s Allianz Arena.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday evening, Enrique was asked how pleasing it that there is finally harmony in PSG’s attacking line after years when it often felt as though individuals were simply doing what they wanted.
“We’ve had this harmony since the get-go,” Enrique replied sharply. “Maybe it’s just something you guys didn’t want to see.
“I am the same person since the get-go, since last season, nothing has changed. They [the players] always play with the glass half-full. I play to their strengths, try to get them to improve individually.”
Enrique also pushed back at the suggestion that reaching finals is a new thing for his team.
Referring predominantly to domestic cup competitions, he said: “This is a team that is actually quite used to playing finals. These are situations we’ve already been in.
“[Inter] are a well-oiled machine. When they don’t have the ball, they defend the ball very well. We are going to try and play to our strengths, where we think we are best.
“I want to ensure my team doesn’t let the emotions get the better of them. What makes us as a team, and what I want to share with my boys, is that our journey has been difficult, a long and winding road. I think we are ready, and I hope we can get it.”
Asked how highly it would rank among his own career achievements if his side lifted the trophy on Saturday, Enrique replied: “No. My ambition is to win this Champions League for PSG and to be the first team in history to do it for Paris.”
