The aggregate winner will advance to the second and final round of the qualifiers. Ultimately, 11 teams will obtain slots to participate at the AWCON.

The top three teams from the tournament will automatically qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The ninth edition of the quadrennial world championship will take place in New Zealand and Australia.

First round qualifying fixtures

This time around, 20 more teams feature during the initial qualification round than during the 2018 edition. With a larger pool of talent, reaching the tournament proper will be even more enticing for each nation.

Fresh to the scene, the Harambee Starlets’ first round opponent of South Sudan will be looking for success against a seasoned opponent.

Among the other CECAFA nations, Ethiopia will play Uganda while Tanzania will play Namibia. Eritrea will face Burundi, Rwanda will be up against Djibouti, and Sudan will play Algeria.
