During these tough times, coach Hansi Flick has had to take on a more nuanced role within the dressing room.

How Flick has played the role of a psychologist

As reported by AS, Flick has had to step beyond his usual tactical responsibilities to take on the role of an improvised psychologist, providing emotional support to his players and staff during this difficult time.

It was earlier reported that the loss of Minarro had gravely impacted the German, who had to maintain calm and composure in the dressing room, having been one of the first ones to learn of Minarro’s demise.

Backed by club president Joan Laporta, Flick took the initiative to hold two consecutive days of group therapy sessions with the squad.

These sessions provided the players with a space to process their emotions and support one another. Among those most affected were Dani Olmo and Gavi, both of whom had a close personal relationship with Minarro.

Olmo had known him through family connections, while Gavi had spent a significant amount of time with him during his rehabilitation process.

The loss has also hit Ricard Pruna, the head of Barcelona’s medical staff. Minarro was not just his colleague but also his trusted right-hand man and the person he saw as his natural successor.

Flick had to keep close contact with all these individuals and offer emotional support and backing.

That said, the tragic loss of Minarro begs the question: why do Barcelona not have a designated psychologist?

Barcelona have been without a mental health specialist since Laia Vinaixa left for Saudi Arabia in January 2024. At that time, sporting director Deco and then-coach Xavi decided to take on these responsibilities.

However, now it is clear that Barcelona must take a closer look at their vacancies and hire a psychologist, without relying on the strict yet compassionate Flick.
