In many ways, this recent game between FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid was a defining moment of the season. For La Blaugrana, a win here would have meant a cup final against Real Madrid and a great boost in momentum. Ultimately, Barcelona managed to achieve both of those things.
By beating Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano, the Catalan giants now know that they can take on any team in the world no matter the venue. For them, getting through this game was a big hurdle and they managed to come out of it unscathed.
In fact, Atletico Madrid could not even score a single goal against Barcelona, and were unable to register even a single shot on target. Following the game, as quoted by Barça Times, Hansi Flick even spoke about the clean sheet and commended his defenders for it:
“The clean sheet was perfect and we fought for everything. All the defenders made an effort. I’m proud of them.”
However, when asked about the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, the German coach simply stated that he is focusing on one game at a time as they come:
“I’m not thinking about that match, because it’s still too far away. I’m only focused on the next match, then the next, and the next.”
Yet, with Barcelona still competing for every single possible title this season, talks about a potential treble were simply inevitable. As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, however, Flick believes that dreaming is allowed but things should be addressed one step at a time:
“I’m focused on the next game… but dreaming is allowed, for sure.”
Following this win, Barça and Atletico Madrid will not be meeting again this season. They have already faced off twice in La Liga, and they have now faced off twice in the Copa del Rey as well. Two of those games have ended in a win for Hansi Flick’s side, and the others have been a draw and a loss.
Currently, the Catalan club is at the top of the La Liga table, in the final of the Copa del Rey, and in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. Moreover, Barcelona has already won the Spanish Super Cup this season, and they did so by thrashing Real Madrid in the final.
