Lewandowski now has a ridiculous 22 goals in just 16 Bundesliga games after his winner was the difference as Bayern squeaked by Augsburg on Wednesday night.

However, for just the second time all season, Lewandowski was taken off the pitch before the 70th-minute mark, which had many fans and pundits scratching their heads.

Following the game, manager Hansi Flick explained how Lewandowski took precautionary measures after the reigning FIFA Player of the Year experienced muscular issues earlier in the day.

“He already felt something in his muscles this morning, but said he could manage it well,” Flick said in his post-match press conference.

“He was supposed to let us know if he couldn’t go on, and that’s what he did.

“It was a precaution because Robert is very important for us. We didn’t want to take any risks there.”

Through 17 games, Bayern sit atop the Bundesliga table, owning a four-point advantage over RB Leipzig. They will play away to Schalke on Sunday.
