Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick says Javi Martínez’s winning goal in Thursday’s UEFA Super Cup was one of football’s “beautiful” stories.

Martínez netted in extra-time to give Bayern a 2-1 victory over Sevilla in Budapest and clinch the fourth major trophy in less than a year since Flick took over as coach.

And with the 32-year-old Spaniard being heavily linked with a return for former club Athletic Bilbao this summer, Flick felt his goal was a poetic moment.

“Javi scored the goal and won us the game. Sometimes football writes these stories – this is a beautiful one,” the Bayern boss told Sky.

“On Wednesday there were reports that he was in Bilbao, yet tonight he scored the winning goal.”

Bayern fell behind on the night to a penalty from Sevilla’s Lucas Ocampos before Leon Goretzka’s equaliser took the game to extra-time.

And Flick was pleased by the resolute nature of his side’s performance.

“It took the first 15 minutes for us to get into the game,” he added.

“It was great for me to see the team try to pull through with their mentality – and succeed. In the end, my players went through the pain barrier to win.”
