The issue of contract renewals is something that FC Barcelona is trying to address as soon as possible. Some players have their current deals expiring soon, so the club has given priority to settling renewals with them first. However, some cases have been easier than others for Barcelona.
First came the renewal for Ronald Araujo, a player whose stay at the club seemed uncertain and there were rumors suggesting that a move to Juventus could end up happening. Barcelona ended up acting quickly and managed to renew the Uruguayan defender until 2031.
Recently, the club has now also reportedly managed to reach agreements with both Pedri and Gavi. As per reports, the Barcelona Golden Boys are also set to officially sign their new deals at some point this week following the upcoming game against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League.
However, it was recently reported that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong would now also be open to renewing his contract with the club. While it may not be for certain, it is definitely a positive development considering the previous complications in the situation.
Still, as highlighted by SPORT, Hansi Flick himself refrained from speaking too much on the matter of the player’s renewal and instead clarified that it was Deco who handles such matters at Barcelona:
“I’m focused on what’s happening now; the rest are matters for Deco. Deco does his job, and I do mine. I’m happy with De Jong, he’s been very good in recent matches, both as a 6 and as an 8.”
With the Barcelona Director handling such concerns, it is right for Flick to point that out. The German coach should be more involved with what happens on the pitch, and that is exactly what Flick is trying to do and it has provided him with good results in January so far.
As for Frenkie de Jong, despite being a player with a lot of quality, he has not had a lot of prominence this season. Primarily due to his bothersome ankle injury, the Barcelona captain was unable to feature often and seemed to not be at his best whenever he did.
In total, he has played around 710 minutes during this campaign. With 19 appearances in total, he has started only five times and finished entire games on even less occasions. However, especially after recent games, his involvement seems to be improving and Hansi Flick seems more than happy with his performances as of late.
