Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has reiterated his desire to see Thomas Müller stay at the club despite rumours of a potential exit at the end of the season.

Müller has been with the Bavarian giants for 20 years now, coming through the youth ranks in the early 2000s and eventually making his senior debut in 2008.

The versatile forward’s game time under previous boss Niko Kovač had been limited but with Flick in charge Müller has once again become integral to the Bayern attack.

There are still rumours that the 30-year-old could leave in a few months though, with both Manchester United and Inter thought to be keen on his services.

But when asked whether he could imagine a Bayern without Müller, Flick admitted he wanted the veteran to stay.

“Those are things that Thomas and the club also have to decide,” he told Bild.

“But in principle about Thomas: He came from the youth academy here. Thomas has reached a certain age in which he won’t play forever anymore.

“Thomas is a native son of Bavaria and one of the faces of the club. I think that such a player has earned a certain amount of gratitude.

“No matter where he goes, Thomas is always a man who stands in the centre of attention and is a character in a positive sense. He’s been through everything, has enormous experience, has celebrated so many triumphs, always radiates self-confidence and optimism.

“He is one of the most successful German players in history.

“Bayern can be happy to have a player like Thomas, who moreover identifies with the club. He always acts in the interest of the team — a factor that you have to take carefully into consideration with new transfers.

“Concerning the question of what new players one should get, this is elementary for me: Do they stand for the “we”? Do they embody the values of the club? Do they identify with FC Bayern?”

Bayern travel to Union Berlin this weekend with the game at Stadion an der Alten Försterei behind closed doors.
