Hans Vanaken is ignoring criticism fired at him by Rafael van der Vaart, saying he has nothing to prove to anyone.
Vanaken was in the Belgium team that lost 4-1 to the Netherlands in the last international break and was criticised by Van der Vaart after the match.
Asked about those comments ahead of the Red Devils’ rematch with Oranje, Vanaken said he wasn’t bothered by them as he’s already proven what he can do.
“That game against the Netherlands was of course not a good feeling, a heavy defeat is never fun,” he told Het Nieuwsblad.
“The fact that I was criticized by Rafael van der Vaart did not do anything for me. I ignore that. I’ve already proven myself enough.”
Vanaken was linked with a move to West Ham all summer but ultimately signed a new contract with Club Brugge.
When asked if the World Cup was a factor in his decision, as he’s guaranteed playing time at his current club, he said it wasn’t.
“I didn’t think much about that when I was choosing to stay or leave,” he said.
