Former Inter captain and long-term goalkeeper Samir Handanovic has been tipped as a potential successor to Cristian Chivu in the role of head coach of Inter’s Primavera side.
Reports from Calciomercato.com indicate that this could be Chivu’s final season in charge of Inter’s youth side, as he is supposedly considering starting fresh with a new challenge in the coming months.
Chivu was appointed head coach of Inter’s Primavera side in July 2021, guiding the young Nerazzurri to a second place finish during his first season. They currently sit at the top of the table after 17 games in 2023-24, one point ahead of Roma in second.
In the event that Chivu does leave, Handanovic is being touted as the ideal replacement.
The 39-year-old hung up his gloves at the end of the 2022-23 campaign after an 11-season spell between the Inter posts. Since then, he has remained in close contact with Inter, and was officially appointed as a goalkeeping scout in November.
Calciomercato report that the Inter hierarchy see good leadership skills in Handanovic, and Chivu’s potential departure could accelerate a plan that has already been in place for quite a while.
