Ajax have announced that technical manager Gerry Hamstra has left the club with immediate effect due to a disagreement over his role.

Hamstra had been with the Amsterdam giants for two years and was under contract until the summer of 2024 but has now moved on after failing to secure the director of football position he craved, one that still needs to be filled.

“It is my goal to be director of football and have all of the responsibility that comes with that and I don’t have that option at Ajax,” he admitted in a parting statement.

“That’s why I’ve decided to leave but I want to thank everyone for our time together.”

Chief executive Edwin van der Sar also acknowledged that the club are seeking a different approach to those matters.

“When Gerry joined Ajax two years ago, the goal was to work together with Marc Overmars and take over part of his work at the youth teams, Ajax U23, and scouting,” he stated.

“After Marc left, Gerry and Klaas Jan Huntelaar were partly responsible for the technical management of the club. We have told Gerry that we want to organise those matters differently. We understand his decision.”
