Sport Bild reports that former Hertha centre-back Jordan Torunarigha is headed back to the Bundesliga. The former German youth international and Olympic representative is in advanced talks with newly promoted Hamburg. Torunarigha shall join on a free transfer from KAA Gent.
Since being sold by Hertha to Gent in July 2022, Torunarigha has often been linked with a move back to his native country. It appears as if Torunarigha’s former Germany U21 coach Stefan Kuntz – currently working as a HSV sporting director – has finally managed to convince the 27-year-old to return.
Torunarigha’s personal journey in German football remains an interesting tale. The Chemnitz-native continued to represent Germany despite repeated instances of racial abuse from fans. Two notable instances occurred in 2017 during a U23 match and in a 2020 DFB Pokal tie.
Torunarigha featured prominently in a popular Documentary “Schwarze Adler“; a Prime Video film chronicling the experiences of black and Afro-German players representing the DFB. Since moving to Belgium, Torunarigha has opted to represent Nigeria internationally.
The move to the Hanseatic City State shall surely constitute an interesting next chapter in Torunarigha’s story. The towering central defender brings with him the experience of 73 top flight appearances for Berlin’s alte Dame.
