Felix Magath scored the goal that earned Hamburg their sole European Cup back in the early 1980s but there was no split loyalties from the Hertha coach this evening as he looked to mastermind the capital club’s stay in the top flight.

It was a rough and ready start with Lucas Trossard involved in a couple of clashes early on.

The first major incident came on 30 minutes as Hamburg had a shout for a penalty after a suspected handball, but following some VAR consultation it was revealed that there had been an earlier handball offence from the visitors themselves.

Into the second half and the deadlock was finally broken on 57 minutes as Ludovit Reis’ cross was deflected over the head of Oliver Christensen and into the far corner.

And that was how it stayed with the second game between these two taking place on Monday.
