Since the return to Bundesliga action, Borussia Dortmund have worked their way up the table and did so again with a statement win over Freiburg keeping the Bundesliga title race hot.

It was a gritty opening 45 minutes at the Westfalenstadion, but two yellow cards in less than two minutes from Kiliann Sildillia gave the hosts a significant leg up.

Dortmund maintained the majority of possession, and Freiburg buckled down in defence after losing a man so early, but Nico Schlotterbeck broke the deadlock from an insanely tight angle for 1-0.

The hosts then struggled to capitalise on their man advantage for the remainder of the first half, and Lucas Höler surprisingly pulled things level on the stroke of half-time.

Yet coming out afterward, Dortmund turned up the heat and let the goals fly en route to a statement win.

Karim Adeyemi doubled things immediately after the restart before Sebastién Haller scored his first for the club after returning to action following his cancer diagnosis (on World Cancer Day, no less).

Freiburg could not create anything worthwhile in attempts to kick start a comeback, and to make matters worse, manager Christian Streich was also sent off with a red card.

Julian Brandt and Giovanni Reyna then scored in front of the Yellow Wall late on, seeing Dortmund win things 5-1 against a title rival.

The result is key for the Bundesliga title race as Edin Terzić’s side now sit third in the table, level with second-place Bayern Munich who play Sunday. Freiburg, meanwhile, are sixth.
