Rangers had the better of it in the opening quarter as Fashion Sakala brought a save out of the goalkeeper before James Tavernier fired over but they were almost caught cold when Kevin Nisbet headed off target when he should have did better.

But on the occasion of his 400th appearance, Rangers skipper Tavernier broke the deadlock shortly after the half hour mark by whipping home a free-kick from wide on the left, although David Marshall will feel disappointed he didn’t do more to keep the ball out at the near post.

Ten minutes after half-time, the visitors doubled their lead when Hagi reacted quickly after an initial attempt was blocked, thrashing low into the corner before being reduced to tears in an emotional celebration given all of his injury problems at Ibrox.

Nisbet came close again with another header in the closing stages, this time nodding off the upright before Todd Cantwell made sure of the points when he turned in from close range.

Paul Hanlon did ensure that Hibs got on the scoresheet with an injury-time consolation.

The result sees Rangers close the gap on Celtic, who have already won the title, to eight points, while Hibs remain four points off local rivals Hearts.
