The hosts found themselves behind early on as a quickfire double allowed Bochum a real foothold in the encounter.

Dortmund youngster Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was denied at close range and, from the subsequent clearance, the visitors took the lead.

Freed down the wing, Takuma Asano’s cross was met by an emphatic Polter header before Asano was at it again, setting up Gerrit Holtmann who curled home from outside the area to double the visitors’ advantage.

Dortmund threatened from set-pieces and were handed a lifeline as VAR found two handballs, awarding two penalties. Erling Haaland stepped up both times to send the keeper the wrong way as he drew the game level.

The Norwegian striker completed the comeback and his hat-trick just after the hour mark.

Bynoe-Gittens played a delightful through ball to Marco Reus who drove into the area and set up the 21-year-old whose unconventionally finish put Dortmund ahead.

Bochum threatened throughout the encounter and two goals in the final ten minutes – including a penalty awarded for a Dortmund handball this time -saw them complete the second remarkable turnaround in this enthralling tale.
