Erling Haaland has been named as the runner-up for the 2023 Ballon d’Or.

The City striker was only behind Argentina forward Lionel Messi who won the award for a record eighth time after guiding his country to the World Cup.

France forward Kylian Mbappe finished third with Kevin De Bruyne and Rodrigo named in fourth and fifth respectively.

In total, City made up half of the top 10 players in the world with Bernardo Silva and Julian Alvarez joining Haaland, De Bruyne And Rodrigo while Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias made it seven players in the top 30.

We had more players than any other Club in that shortlist following our incredible Treble campaign when we won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

And City also had three players in the top 30 of the women’s Ballon d’Or with Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, Jill Roord and Yui Hasegawa shortlisted for the prize won by Aitana Bonmati.

Haaland rewrote the record books in his debut season, scoring 52 times in all competitions to also win the Gerd Muller Trophy at the award ceremony in Paris.

His 36 goals in the Premier League were more than any other player in a single campaign and his total in all competitions was the most by a Premier League footballer.

He was also the top scorer in the Champions League with 12 and scored six hat-tricks for City, including in three successive home matches.

Along with the Gerd Muller Trophy, Haaland has added two more awards to his personal collection after winning the Premier League Golden Boot, the European Golden Shoe, Etihad Player of the Season, Premier League Player of the Season, Premier League Young Player of the Season, FWA Men’s Footballer of the Year an being named in the Champions League Team of the Season.

Rodrigo was placed fifth, Alvarez in seventh and Bernardo in ninth.

Dias ranked 30th and Gvardiol, signed in the summer from RB Leipzig in 25th, while Ilkay Gundogan, who was captain during the Treble-winning season was ranked 14th.
