In what is likely to be stunning news to fans, Liverpool have surged to the front of the queue and are now favourites to sign Sporting Lisbon lethal hitman Viktor Gyokeres, in what would be a major blow to title rivals Arsenal.
The Reds have wasted no time since winning the Premier League again for the second time in five years, being highly proactive in the summer transfer window so far.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid was probably the worst kept secret in football from around the time of February and many fans appeared concerned.
In Jeremie Frimpong though, the Reds have signed someone who is arguably better and for a steal at nearly £30 million.
His teammate at Bayer Leverkusen appears like he could be joining him at Anfield and it seems the finishing touches are being applied to what would be a major signing for well over £100 million.
In what will be fantastic business, it seems that the Reds could also now sign Gyokores who has been one of Europe’s most dangerous centre forwards over the last two years. The former Coventry man is said to be high on the Reds’ radar, with news having filtered through that the Sweden international could be open to joining.
Having scored 54 goals in 52 matches this season, he has emerged into one of the most sought-after strikers on the continent and it could well be that, despite his release clause of £85 million, it is suggested that his club may sanction a £60 million transfer for the 26-year-old. He almost single-handedly dismantled Manchester City in the Champions League last season as well, so he is more than capable of cutting it against strong teams.
With Darwin Nunez and perhaps even Luis Diaz likely to leave in lucrative transfers, it will mean a major reshuffle in attack for Liverpool which could become the most dangerous front three in football.
Mohamed Salah, Gyokeres and Wirtz could well be frightening for defences next season and, perhaps with a new addition in midfield and the impending arrival of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez at left-back, a consecutive Premier League title should not be ruled out.
With Frimpong already in and Kerkez appearing to be on his way, it will give the Reds significant weapons from deep. They have the energy to get back and defend and are fantastic going forward.
Kerkez probably has the best left foot in his position in the English top-flight, capable of putting in near pin-point crosses, while Frimpong at times, played inadvertently as a winger for Leverkusen over the last two seasons. The last campaign alone he managed five assists and five goals in the Bundesliga.
It is still only early in the summer transfer window – the club clearly has funds to spend after barely entering the market last time around, while they could also reinvest into squad players from player sales. Watch this space.
