FLW debate whether the Blades' star man is worthy of his salary
Gus Hamer has been one of the Championship's star performers for some time, excelling for both Coventry City and Sheffield United in recent seasons.
Unsurprisingly, this has led to plenty of discourse surrounding his long-term future at Bramall Lane, with many supporters and pundits believing the playmaker has a ceiling way beyond the top of the second tier, which is hard to disagree with when looking at his catalogue of goals and assists.
The Blades' start to life under Ruben Selles has been far from ideal, although the Dutch-Brazilian has, unsurprisingly, remained the standout performer in this part of the Steel City despite a winless start under the Spaniard in all competitions.
Due to the way in which football now operates, there is also plenty of talk surrounding finances as well as what happens on the pitch, and with that being said, FLW have debated whether last season's Championship Player of the Year is worthy of his ESTIMATED salary in S2 as per Capology.
Hamer is now into his third season at Bramall Lane after initially moving to South Yorkshire two seasons ago following United's most recent promotion to the Premier League under Paul Heckingbottom on a four-year contract.
In what was a beyond dismal season for the club under Heckingbottom and the returning Chris Wilder, the playmaker was one of very few bright spots, managing to still accumulate double figures when it came to goal contributions, before once again showing his top-end ability in the Championship last term with 10 goals and eight assists during the regular season.
According to Capology, Hamer takes home a weekly salary of £30,000 per week at present, which, over the course of a season, equates to a grand total of £1,560,000.
Due to an array of high-profile departures such as Rhian Brewster, Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic, Hamer is now, by far and away, the highest earner at Bramall Lane with the aforementioned sum. However, despite his reputation at the level, the 28-year-old is still £60,000 short of the current highest earner who is playing at the level at present, with that particular honour going to Harry Winks of Leicester City, who takes home a weekly salary of £90,000.
Given the fact that Hamer joined the club prior to the takeover by current ownership group, COH Sports, some would argue that his salary could have been different had he moved up the M1 at a later date from the CBS Arena, and the figure would no doubt have been increased had the Blades made an immediate return to the top flight last term.
If he was to leave the club between now and Deadline Day, it would also be intriguing to see what his wages at a new club would be, as, despite prior interest from the likes of Everton and Leeds United, it has been reported by the Sheffield Star that Hamer's preference would be to return to the Netherlands.
Given his overall contribution at Bramall Lane in such a short period of time, and the quality which he possesses, as shown by a stunning strike against Birmingham City in the EFL Cup, many would say that he is deserving of a new contract and pay rise.
However, the most important scenario for Selles at present is solely retaining his prized asset after September 1st. Doing so will be crucial to the Spaniard's aims of turning the tide and easing the early pressure, which has come from a sluggish and uninspiring start to the campaign for a side expected to once again challenge for a play-off spot at the very least.
