Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has rubbished suggestions that last season's Champions League loss is motivating the team.

The Citizens fell in the quarter finals against Lyon last season in a one off tie after the COVID-19 lockdowns.

But Gundogan says they are only focusing on the round of 16 clash with Borussia Monchengladbach, not only looking back.

"It is not something that is forgotten, to be honest," said Gundogan to reporters.

"But it is not something that gives us any extra motivation. It is a new year, a new option, a new chance and a new challenge. We just try to do our best, as we did in the past."
