As reported by Record, Pachuca coach Guillermo Almada is the early front-runner to be named the new coach of the Mexican national team following the now-former manager Gerardo Martino’s departure after his team’s group stage exit in Qatar.

Uruguayan coach Almada took Pachuca to the Apertura title earlier this season via the playoffs having seen his team finish fourth in the regular season and is a prime candidate for the Mexican federation due to his knowledge of Liga MX. Jaime Ordiales, the Mexican FA’s director of national teams, is said to be looking for a Mexican coach or one that knows the nation’s domestic leagues. Almada’s ability to develop young players is also a key factor.

Jaime Lozano is also a potential option for the Mexican federation after he took Mexico to a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year but his lack of club experience counts against him, say the outlet. Despite not fitting the criteria, Roberto Martinez’s reputation means he is also being considered as a candidate. However, Ordiales has been told to take his time in choosing a new coach given the importance of the decision with the 2026 World Cup being co-hosted by El Tri.
