Matteo Guendouzi was named Man of the Match after Lazio beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League. ‘This award is to be shared with the whole team.’

The midfielder has made a big impact in his debut season with the Biancocelesti and impressed again at the Stadio Olimpico in this evening’s 1-0 victory.

It was decided by a Ciro Immobile penalty after Dayot Upamecano saw red for the foul on Gustav Isaksen.

“It was a performance with quality and energy. We achieved our first objective, but now we must earn qualification for the next phase,” Guendouzi told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

The second leg will be in Munich on March 5 and there is no more away goals rule in UEFA tournaments, so any defeat there by a single-goal margin will prompt extra time.

Coach Maurizio Sarri said that the Lazio team ‘moved as an entity with one mind’ and that was backed by Guendouzi.

“This award is to be shared with the whole team, we played really well. It is going to be difficult in Munich, we must play the way we know how.

“Before that, we’ve got Bologna in Serie A, then we can think about Bayern.”

This was not the planned midfield to start the game against Bayern Munich, as Matias Vecino was named in the starting XI and pulled out with an injury during the warm-up.
