City stormed into a sensational lead after just 13 seconds when their captain unleashed a stunning volley from 25 yards out which rippled into the top corner leaving David De Gea stranded.

A long ball up-field was headed away by Raphaël Varane and into the path of the German, who stunned Wembley to score the fastest FA Cup final goal in the competition’s history.

Man United were given a way back into the game just after the half-hour mark when they were awarded a penalty for handball against Jack Grealish.

Referee Paul Tierney awarded the spot-kick following a VAR check with Bruno Fernandes sending Stefan Ortega the wrong way to level proceedings.

But Gündoğan stepped up to provide another big moment for his team, scoring his second to restore the lead for Pep Guardiola’s side at the start of the second half.

Kevin De Bruyne’s floated free-kick found the midfielder free at the edge of the box and he provided another volley, this time with his left-footed, which trickled past De Gea into the bottom corner.

United rallied to find their way back into the game with Marcus Rashford firing a shot over before substitute Alejandro Garnacho saw his effort from the edge of the box flash just wide of the far post.

Stefan Ortega then rushed out to stop Varane from levelling in the dying minutes of stoppage time as the search for an equaliser became hectic.

However, it was to be City’s day as they lifted the FA Cup for the seventh time and move one step closer to the treble – a feat achieved by United in 1999.
