Guardiola keen to earn Man City contract extension after four years at the club | OneFootball

Pep Guardiola says he is committed to Manchester City for the long term and is keen to earn a contract extension with a strong season at Eastlands.

Guardiola has entered the final year of his deal with the club but talks are yet to begin over an extension for the Spaniard, who will begin his fifth season in charge when Man City take on Wolves at Molineux this evening.

The 49-year-old has won six major honours since moving to English football and has reiterated his happiness with life in the Premier League, but insists he must prove he deserves a new deal as City look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign last term.

“I would love to stay longer here,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference. “It’s a place I love to be, but I have to deserve.

“This club achieved standards in the last decade but we have to maintain that and I have to deserve it. I’m going to see if I deserve it this season, in terms of how the club goes forward and improves.

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t feel the fire or the desire to play good.

“I still want to help the players avoid making mistakes and still I have the passion to do it – maybe more than ever. I want to try to be together and have a good season.”

Guardiola’s stay at the Etihad is already the longest period he has spent with a club in his managerial career, this season being the first time the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss entered a fifth year with one club.

The two-time title winner says there has not yet been time to discuss extending that stay even further amid City’s hectic schedule, though says there is no rush with the Spaniard keeping regular contact with the club’s hierarchy as they bid to bring further success to the Etihad.

“We have, every three days, a game, so we don’t have much time to think about it,” said Guardiola.

“I try to see Txiki [Begiristain] and Ferran [Soriano] every day, and I speak every week with Khaldoon [Al Mubarak].

“When it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. Now we have other issues. It will not be a problem for the club to do what we have to do in the future.”
