Pep Guardiola says he is hopeful over the fitness of Sergio Aguero after Manchester City rediscovered their goalscoring touch with an ‘important’ 5-0 win over Burnley.

City have struggled for goals so far this season and had managed just 10 in eight fixtures heading into today’s clash at the Etihad, but the free-flowing attacking play of recent seasons was back as they thrashed the hapless visitors.

Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick with further goals from Benjamin Mendy and Ferran Torres, City remarkably beating Burnley by a 5-0 scoreline at home for the fourth consecutive campaign.

City were irresistible going forward with Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne starring, the former netting two classy finishes in the first-half before heading home his first treble for the club in the second half.

Guardiola was pleased with an ‘important’ victory for his side which moves City within six points of league leaders Liverpool with a game in hand, praising an impressive attacking performance against the outclassed Clarets.

“It was important to come back with a victory in the Premier League. One more game,” Guardiola said.

“We play a lot of games so to play 90 minutes and maintain a good level is not easy but there are always things to improve on.

“It’s important for our people to score goals and it is a chance for them to keep playing.”

Guardiola also offered an update on the fitness of record goalscorer Sergio Aguero, who was left out of the squad despite making his return from injury as a substitute against Olympiakos in midweek.

The Spaniard revealed that the 32-year-old had felt some discomfort in his knee, Aguero having undergone surgery for a knee problem during the summer before suffering a hamstring injury in last months’ draw at West Ham.

Guardiola says he is hopeful the star will be able to return to training tomorrow, as City step up their preparations ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League clash at Porto.

“Sometimes it is just a reaction on the knee,” he said of the Argentine. “It is swollen. Hopefully tomorrow he can come back to training.

“Now it is three days then another one. We have to travel and prepare fully.”
