Pep Guardiola has said his Manchester City side ‘made it hard for ourselves’ during the club’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad.
City were beaten for the first time in the Premier League this season as first-half goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha earned Spurs victory.
Johnson opened the scoring on 35 minutes after turning in from Richarlison’s cross, with the latter beating the offside trap to get in behind and tee up the winger. City struggled to deal with the high press of Spurs all game and the visitors doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time.
James Trafford played a poor pass out into his own penalty box and Pape Matar Sarr stole possession. The ball broke to Palhinha, who fired home his first goal for Spurs.
City lacked the sharpness of last weekend’s win at Wolves, with Erling Haaland guilty of squandering their best chance. His slack pass was too heavy for Rayan Cherki, when a tap-in appeared inevitable.
Guardiola admitted mistakes cost his side, criticising City’s continued inaccuracy with ‘simple passes’.
“The performance was better in general. We missed the simple passes a lot but we gave everything. We made it hard for ourselves with the second goal. We know the physicality they had. We lost simple balls,” Guardiola said, speaking to BBC Match of the Day.
