Pep Guardiola has raised doubts over the fitness of ‘important’ Sergio Aguero and admits Manchester City need to be ‘careful’ following the forward’s return from injury.

Aguero returned to the squad for the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday but remained an unused substitute during the loss in north London, the Argentine having just returned from a hamstring injury picked up at West Ham last month.

That spell on the sidelines came following a five-month lay-off after undergoing knee surgery, and Man City will be keen to get their all-time record goalscorer up and running as quickly as possible, with Guardiola’s side having managed just 10 goals in eight league fixtures this season.

The Spaniard admits a fully fit Aguero will be a huge boost to his side’s plans following an indifferent start to the campaign, but has urged caution with the 31-year-old as they bid to eradicate his fitness issues.

“I’m not going to say we don’t need Sergio, we need him,” he said at his post-match press conference. “But Sergio, when he was 31 years old, was injured for five months with a difficult and dangerous injury.

“He came back, played 50/55 minutes and then got injured again. We want him and I want Sergio fit because I now discover how important he is for us with what he has done in the Premier League.

“But we have to be careful so he doesn’t come back and get injured again. We need the right moment to put him inside. Hopefully it can be soon and maintain the regularity to play games.”
