Leigh Griffiths provided some last minute added value to those of us who paid £12.99 to watch the Scottish Premiership dead rubber at Pittodrie this evening, when he headed home from close range in the closing seconds to rescue a point for John Kennedy’s malfunctioning side in a season that frankly can’t end soon enough.

Odsonne Edouard missed two sitters, had a goal disallowed from offside (no coverage of that on Red TV but he looked onside and then set up David Turnbull but his ostentatious effort rattled off the crossbar. Sometimes it’s better to modestly tuck it away son.

Aberdeen scored from a set piece, this time Lewis Ferguson got on the end of a ball into the Celtic box and was unchallenged for a few yards out.

The home side were relieved to hear Willie Collum’s whistle signalling the end of a first half that Celtic dominated and should have had several goals but there was nothing doing in terms of decent finishing or composure – we even saw the return of the rugby conversion from Ryan Christie as Celtic served up a summary of the season in the opening 45 minutes. Aberdeen couldn’t believe their luck.

One of the pundits on Aberdeen TV was Willie Gardner, a defensive rock for Aberdeen but when Billy McNeill brought him to Parkhead he managed to score to own goals against St Mirren then followed it with another – was it against St Johnstone (David Potter or Matt Corr will know) and young Hoops fans – if you thought Shane Duffy was bad then you should have seen big Willie. Apparently he’s a good Celtic man – could have fooled me with his biased summaries this evening.

Jonny Hayes fell over at the edge of the Celtic box after great tracking back from Callum McGregor – Greg Taylor was Celtic’s last man when he lost the ball to the former Celtic man just outside the Aberdeen box! Hayes ran the length of the park, shadowed only by McGregor, then fell over as his legs went before Collum waved away the penalty appeals.

Dembele and Rogic came on the former contributing something at least that suggests there could be a decent first team player there, probably not at Celtic though. Rogic is a shadow of his former self, hiding, winding down the clock on his lucrative contract.

Just when we all accepted the inevitable with wee Willie looking at his watch Griffiths rose to head a brilliant Moi Elyounoussi cross across the young Aberdeen keeper and into the net.

And by that time we’d heard that Celtic FC Women – who The Celtic Star has supported and featured for every kick of the ball all season long – had beaten theRangers for the second time this evening with a 1-0 victory. The goal coming on 80 minutes from Mariah Lee giving Celtic the three points that puts us right back in the box in hat is now a three way fight for the title.

The Cynic were invited to Celtic Park this evening and as they have a great appreciation and insight into the Women’s game, we’ll check out what they have to say in their match report for a game that was live on BBC Alba.

Others, very late to the party were invited along too, but sadly not The Celtic Star. It was only a few short months ago that this site bravely (or perhaps stupidly) put itself in harms way to fight Celtic’s corner, providing information to supporters coming out of the ill-fated trip to Dubai from those on the ground. And there are plenty of other similar examples of battles fought for a club like no other.

One born every day.
