RFC Seraing have announced that Grégory Proment has resigned as head coach of the club. The former FC Metz coach joined the RFC Seraing set up back in 2021 as part of the youth team, before becoming an assistant coach for the main team during the 2022/2023 campaign. He took ovre as head coach to start the season, but after a humiliating 5-1 home defeat to then second bottom Francs Borains, he handed in his letter of resignation to the board.
From the 2019/2020 season onwards, RFC Seraing have had quite a rise. They won promotion to the second tier of Belgian football that season, and with the help of their sister club Metz were able to go straight up to the Pro League. After avoiding relegation during their first season, they were not so fortunate during the 2022/2023 campaign. The relegation of Metz to Ligue 2 meant they could no longer rely on a number of stalwart players coming across the border. Without the funds to find the talent required, they were comfortably relegated to the Challenger Pro League.
However, their fortunes have not improved so far this season. Despite bringing in a handful of players from the Metz youth set-up, they are languishing in 15th place, just ahead of an Oostende side that may well go out of business in the coming weeks. Seraing would likely be bottom if Oostende had not had points deductions handed out for their financial mismanagement. RFC Seraing’s past three seasons of success look like they are coming to an end with a return to the third tier a real possibility.
