Greg Taylor – There is still a chance, albeit a small one

The 27 year-old was pictured alongside Hoops midfielder Luke McCowan in Formentera in Spain enjoying a well-deserved break before heading back for pre-season. But, just where will Taylor’s pre-season commence? Does Taylor even know where he will be next season?
Reports last week of the Scotland international being 48 hours away from sealing a move to Greek side PAOK were quickly quashed when Sky Sports broke the news that Danish champions Copenhagen were attempting to hijack a deal.

Cards on the table, I am one of Taylor’s biggest admirers. In group chats, at games, in pubs and anywhere else you have conversations with your Celtic supporting family and friends, Taylor will always split opinion.
For me, he is the prophet unappreciated in his own land. Once he is gone, perhaps there may be reflection on how much he has contributed to Celtic over the past six seasons. Boli Bolingoli, Diego Laxalt, Adam Montgomery, Alexandro Bernabei, Alex Valle and Jeffery Schlupp are just some of the left-backs he has seen off during his time at Celtic.

Gaining the trust of three Celtic managers who have won Trebles – Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers – Taylor has made 216 appearances and been a vital part in 11 domestic honours during his time at the club.
Rodgers has already dismissed talk of money being the primary factor to why he will not sign a contract. The fact is, Taylor is at perhaps the most crucial point of his career. At 27 with a young family he wants to play regularly. Does Kieran Tierney returning to the Hoops on a five-year deal hinder his opportunities next season?
Undoubtedly.
However, that is not to say he still cannot play an integral role in routine domestic matches or cup games. With Celtic playing the best part of 55-60 matches a season due to the increased volume of European games, Taylor will be called upon frequently regardless of Tierney coming through the door or not.

Crucially, Taylor has not committed to any deal as of yet. Alas, there is still a chance, albeit a small one, he will sign a new contract at Celtic. But, should he depart officially, let’s at least give credit to a model professional and a talented player who performed for the club on a consistent basis for six years.
And if he does decide to leave Celtic, he should go with all of our best wishes an gratitude for an outstanding contribution to the Celtic cause.
We’ll know soon enough one way of the other but the fact that nothing has been decided yet gives me some cause for hope that the attraction and stability of that high earning, five year contract at Celtic is pulling him back to Celtic as his choice. The grass is always green at Celtic Park, Greg.
