On 12 December 1984, Santiago Bernabéu was the scene for a historic comeback against Anderlecht. Real Madrid faced the Belgian side in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup. In the first leg they lost 3-0 in Brussels, but the return leg was a different story and it was a truly memorable night for Real Madrid.
The Whites got off to a blistering start to go 3-0 ahead in the first 30 minutes, with Sanchís, Butragueño and Valdano scoring the goals to give their side hope. But on 33' a goal by Frimann set Anderlecht back on course to progress to the next round. Real Madrid had to dig deep and Valdano made it 4-1 before the break.
Heroic Butragueño Real Madrid still had the whole of the second half to play and needed one more goal to make it through to the quarter-finals. They didn't have to wait long as Butragueño fired in a powerful shot from inside the area to extend the lead. 'El Buitre' produced a sublime performance and completed his hat-trick on 49' from inside the six-yard box. The final score of 6-1 marked another historic night in European football for the madridistas. The result meant that Madrid could take a big step towards winning its first UEFA Cup trophy.
