Preston North End have agreed a deal in principle to bring Leicester City goalkeeper Daniel Iversen back to Deepdale on a free transfer, with the Danish shot-stopper set to replace the departing Freddie Woodman.

As per a recent FLW exclusive, Preston are closing in on a move for the 27-year-old goalkeeper, who previously enjoyed two successful loan spells with the club.

Iversen made a total of 71 appearances for North End across his two loan stints.

The move comes at a crucial time for Ryan Lowe's side, with current number one Freddie Woodman leaving after three years at the club.

Woodman joined Preston in 2022 and has been a consistent performer for the Lilywhites, making 138 appearances for the Lancashire outfit.

Major verdict delivered on potential Daniel Iversen return to Preston North End

We spoke to our resident PNE fan pundit, Darren Watson, to get his thoughts on the potential return of Iversen and whether he believes the Danish goalkeeper can adequately replace Woodman.

"Personally, I think Daniel Iversen back to the club is a good move for Preston North End. We had him on loan obviously a few seasons ago now and he did really well, quite a fan favourite actually to be fair," Watson began.

"He made some fantastic saves, but at the time Preston couldn't bring him back because of his price tag, and we had to go out and look at other options, which then we got Freddie Woodman.

"He's a good keeper, looking forward to seeing - when the deal is confirmed - how he performs in the first-team position. He's been at Leicester in a role where he hasn't had any first-team game-time experience. I know he's played a couple of Premier League games for Leicester when other people have been injured.

"But yes, he's a great keeper, and I'm looking forward to seeing him back in the first-team at Deepdale. I'm just looking forward to seeing him back in a first-team role and seeing what he can do.

"He has got the confidence when he's playing at his best, so if we can get that out of him he'll be a great signing for Preston."

His most recent Championship action came during a loan spell with Stoke City in the 2023/24 season, where he featured 18 times. Despite his lack of regular game time at his parent club, Iversen's previous performances at Preston demonstrated his quality and ability to perform consistently at Championship level.

Iversen's return to Deepdale would mark a significant coup for Preston, especially on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper has found opportunities limited at Leicester City, making just 12 league appearances for the Foxes since joining the club in 2016.

Standing at 6'4", the Danish goalkeeper brings an imposing presence to the penalty area, and his distribution could add another dimension to Preston's play next season.

His previous popularity among the North End faithful will likely mean he'll receive a warm welcome should the deal be finalised in the summer too.

Whilst concerns might exist about his lack of game time over the past year, Iversen's familiarity with the club and proven track record in the Championship suggests he could quickly rediscover his best form.

At 27, the goalkeeper is entering what should be his prime years, potentially giving Preston a long-term solution between the posts.

The move would represent another example of nice business from Preston, who continue to identify value opportunities in the transfer market, most notably from Mads Frøkjaer-Jensen, Emil Riis and Stefan Thordarson in recent times.
