An excellent week for Newcastle United when it came to European football.

Arsenal’s victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday kicked things off.

The win for the Gunners was the topping point that guaranteed the Premier League gets one of the two bonus places in next season’s Champions League.

With Newcastle United currently in fifth, at the moment they would be the ones to benefit directly from this.

However, I wanted to broaden it out, look at how that Arsenal result and indeed almost all of the other European results for English clubs have had a direct positive impact on key individual upcoming Premier League matches that Newcastle United have to face to try and get that ultimate end of season prize of a place in the Champions League.

Sunday 13 April – Newcastle v Man U (4.30pm) Sky Sports

Manchester United played last night in France, a very late Lyon equaliser made it 2-2. Man U have nothing to play for in the Premier League, they can’t be relegated and no chance of getting a place in European competition through the PL. So they will be throwing everything at trying to get past Lyon and reach the Europa League semi-finals. A very tough match for Man U last night, less than 72 hours before facing Newcastle and having to get back from France. Man U then play Lyon on Thursday at Old Trafford. Whatever Amorim says, he knows their entire season rests on the Europa League, not this Newcastle match.

Wednesday 16 April – Newcastle v Palace (7.30pm) Sky Sports

No European football for Palace but the possibility of a first ever trophy in their entire club history. Palace have an FA Cup semi-final ten days after facing Newcastle, with a very busy schedule before that Wembley match, I think for sure they will be constantly changing their Premier League starting elevens, as they have nothing to play for in the league. Their schedule is 12 April Man City away, 16 April NUFC away, 19 April Bournemouth home, 23 April Arsenal away, 26 April Villa FA Cup semi.

Saturday 19 April – Villa v Newcastle (5.30pm) Sky Sports

A 3-1 defeat in Paris on Wednesday (9 April), Villa now have an all or nothing match on Tuesday (15 April) at Villa Park to try and turn it around against PSG and reach the Champions League semis. Their players looked absolutely wrecked on Wednesday as PSG are such an intensive quality team to play against. Having to play Newcastle four days later, I can’t see how this will do NUFC anything but good, no matter what the end result for Villa in Europe. Villa only have an outside chance of Champions League qualification via the league and a week after facing Newcastle they have their FA Cup semi. Such a busy schedule for Unai Emery to manage and tough decisions to make on team selections for key players.

Saturday 26 April – Newcastle v Ipswich (3pm)

Sunday 4 May – Brighton v Newcastle (2pm) Sky Sports

Saturday 10 May – Newcastle v Chelsea (12.30pm) TNT Sports (***If Chelsea get through to Conference League semi-finals, Newcastle v Chelsea will be played Sunday 11 May with a 12pm kick-off, still live on TNT Sports)

Thursday night saw Chelsea win 3-0 away against Legia Warsaw in the first leg of their Euro quarter-final. That surely guarantees progress to the semi-finals of the Conference League and so the Newcastle v Chelsea match is set to be 12 noon kick-off on Sunday 11 May. Assuming that is the case, then Chelsea will play the second leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final on Thursday 8 May. That game will see the final whistle blown only around 60 hours before the kick-off against Newcastle.

Sunday 18 May – Arsenal v Newcastle TBC

Arsenal are now massive favourites to reach the Champions League semi-finals, leading Real Madrid 3-0 from the first leg. Assuming they get through, Arsenal would then have the second leg of their CL semi-final on eight 6 May or 7 May. The Gunners then play Liverpool away in the Premier League on Sunday 11 May, then are due to face Newcastle United the following weekend, though the date and time for that match at the Emirates is still to be confirmed. If Arsenal did get to the CL final, that will be played on Saturday 31 May. By the time Newcastle face Arsenal, the Gunners will have nothing to play for in the Premier League, guaranteed second I reckon. Whilst if they do reach that Champions League final, their last home match of the season against Newcastle will be very much not a priority.
