The phrase was outlawed by Antonio Conte during his time in charge but, after this weekend, there is now no escaping the truth: Pazza Inter are back.

Meaning crazy or insane, “pazza” has traditionally been prefixed to the club’s name, with Pazza Inter becoming a moniker for the team, with even their own fans using it to describe the wild ride of supporting the Nerazzurri.

Conte was not a fan but now, over a year on from his departure, the club have slipped back into old ways under Simone Inzaghi.

That was evident at Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday night as an intense atmosphere was compounded by late goals, great goals, and refereeing controversy. A scintillating encounter by anyone’s definition.

Although Inter raced away with the lead, going 2-0 up after just a quarter of an hour, they had to rely on a 95th minute winner from Henrikh Mkhitaryan to take the three points.

Just over a month ago, Inzaghi was under pressure from the sack, but with two wins over Barcelona in the Champions League and improved domestic form, the boss is looking much more secure in his position. Even if the fans have to go through the full range of emotions to secure the three points.

The home fans were unhappy with a number of controversial refereeing decisions on the night, and so too was Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Italiano.

“I don’t even know what to say,” Fiorentina boss told Sky Italia afterwards. “It is yet another doubt over the refereeing decisions, as there was a foul moments before the winning goal. “Nikola [Milenković] was in the right position, [Edin] Džeko even pulled his shirt. It is not the first dubious decision to go against us and that’s worrying when looking at our position in the table.”

And things went from bad to worse when Fiorentina’s Luka Jović cupped his ears to his own fans after scoring what looked to have been a 90th minute equaliser, following criticism of his lack of goals – just two in the league – since arriving from Real Madrid in the summer.

The heightened atmosphere reportedly spilled over into the aftermath, as the Italian papers suggested that their had been some scuffles between the Fiorentina and Inter management teams and that referee Paolo Valeri would likely be suspended by the league for his poor performance until 2023.

Pazza indeed.

And elsewhere …

Luciano Spalletti came out on top as he went up against José Mourinho in a fascinating Derby del Sole on Sunday. Napoli have become accustomed to beating their opponents by heavy scorelines, but this time there was only one goal in it, courtesy of striker Victor Osimhen.

Atalanta suffered a heavy setback at home when Lazio – without injured striker Ciro Immobile – delivered an impressive 2-0 victory. That result saw drop to fourth in the table and are now equal on points with Maurizio Sarri’s men.

Udinese were also flying high at the beginning of the campaign, but they were shocked at home to Torino. Ivan Jurić masterminded the 2-1 away win and was helped by a goal from former teenage prodigy Pietro Pellegri. The Friulians now drop into sixth place in the table, one point behind Roma, while Toro moved up into ninth.

There were a number of candidates for the best goal of the weekend from Milan’s win over Monza, but this stunning solo effort from Brahim Díaz just edges them all. Receiving the ball in his own half from goalkeeper Ciprian Tătăruşanu, the Real Madrid loanee dribbled all the way into the box, and had the composure to finish beyond Monza stopper Michele Di Gregorio.

This week’s award simply has to go to Lautaro Martínez for his superb performance against Fiorentina. The Argentinian forward had two goals and an assist during that tough encounter and has now scored four goals in his last three games, breaking a streak in which he went four games without a goal.
