‘Great boost’ – Pundit tips barely-seen Newcastle player to start v Arsenal after Bruce update | OneFootball

Noel Whelan has tipped Newcastle United new boy Danny Rose to make his first start for the club against Arsenal on Sunday.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that a player of the left-back’s quality should be going straight into the starting XI if he is available.

Bruce confirmed at his pre-match press conference that he would have the 29-year-old to choose from for Sunday’s visit to north London, giving the manager the chance to hand the defender his second Premier League start since October.

Rose, who struggled for game time at Spurs before his loan move, has played just 11 minutes for Newcastle since signing, replacing Allan Saint-Maximin in the 0-0 draw with Norwich City.

Whelan says that there is no doubt he should be featuring from the first whistle at the Emirates Stadium, insisting he will be a boost to the whole squad.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think if he’s fit and he’s ready, Danny Rose goes straight in because he’s an England international. You need that sort of quality, he knows the Premier League inside out.

“He’ll be a great boost just to have out there on the field for the rest of the players as well. In my opinion, I’m not Steve Bruce, he would be playing straight away.”

Rose played just five times under Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho before being allowed to leave on loan, with young Japhet Tanganga appearing to leapfrog him in the pecking order.

Newcastle lost the reverse fixture against the Gunners 1-0, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring the only goal at St James’ Park.
