The Scottish youth side were nominated for ScottishPower’s prize giveaway by Hearts players Georgia Hunter and Esther Morgan. Currie FC fields youth teams for girls aged 5-16 in local ESSDA and SERYFA leagues, and will receive bibs, cones, water bottles and footballs to further their game.
As the SWPL Principal Partner, ScottishPower provided a kit package to community clubs nominated by the top six SWPL captains. While Ranger’s skipper Nicola Docherty nominated Giffnock FC from the south of Glasgow, the Heart’s captain drew attention to the outskirts of Edinburgh where Currie FC fields youth teams for girls aged 5-16 in local ESSDA and SERYFA leagues.
Speaking on her decision to nominate the side, Georgia Hunter said: “I think it’s important that the girls have the right facilities and equipment when training. It supports them as a young player as they develop and improve and can help them reach the level of professionalism that’s now available to young girls.
“When I was younger it was difficult to even see that that was possible. We’d get hand-me-down kits and we’d struggle even to get enough cones for training, the investment just wasn’t there, but now with initiatives like this, girls can just come to training and get on with doing what they want to do.”
After receiving the new kit, Coach Sammy Hyett spoke on the impact it could have: “This generous support enhances our training sessions, allowing our players to develop their skills and confidence. It’s a significant step toward empowering young female athletes. Together, we’re fostering a supportive community that inspires the next generation of female football in Scotland.”
ScottishPower became the exclusive Principal Partner for Scottish Women’s Football and the Scottish Women’s Premier League at the start of last season. The kit giveaway is indicative of wider aims to grow the women’s game in Scotland from grassroots to elite level.
