The grandson of Liverpool legend Bill Shankly, Chris Carline, has revealed that he would happily see the statue of his grandad removed from Anfield.

Carline says that the plans for a Super League that Liverpool are involved in could not be further away from what his grandad believed in.

He says that Shankly would be ‘spinning in his grave’ at the current situation, following the news that Liverpool will be one of the 12 founding members of the Super League.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Carline hit out at the Super League plans and spoke about his grandad’s legacy. “I know my grandad has been quoted more than ever right now, and rightly so, because what is going on couldn’t be further removed from what he wanted for this football club.

“I’m appalled and embarrassed. When you talk about Liverpool Football Club and its history and its roots, you could reference seven, eight or nine of grandad’s quotes which are all appropriate to the current situation – socialism, greed and the Holy Trinity – but I also think about one of the less well known comments. It’s from his book, when he spoke about wanting to bring the football club closer to the fans and the fans closer to the football club. And he achieved that.

“It’s not an understatement to say he would be spinning in his grave at the current situation because it couldn’t be further removed from his ethos.

“Given the chance I’d happily see the statue removed.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

This is incredibly sad to read. Bill Shankly, as shown by the fact he has a statue outside Anfield, is a legend at Liverpool and his ideals are being trodden on by the very idea of a closed-off Super League. As his grandson outlines, Shankly wanted to bring clubs and fans together and Liverpool’s owners are currently tearing them apart with their plans to join this Super League next season. This was shown by the banners placed outside of Anfield on Monday stating “Liverpool fans against European Super League”.

Liverpool are alienating some fans by making this decision going against Shankly’s legacy by disregarding everything that he believed in, both in terms of society and football. Carline has explained exactly why it does that, although taking down his statue may not be an appropriate response. Shankly’s statue should stay and serve as a permanent reminder of what football, and Liverpool, should be about; the fans, the community, the love for the sport. Not the money.
